The castle has a polygonal floor plan with three D-shaped corner towers that are connected by curved retaining walls (curtain walls). To the southern site, this floor plan however shows a rather remarkable deviation. The southern retaining wall has no curved but a straight-lined design. The archaeological survey demonstrated that the rectilinear curtain wall was indeed part of the original concept. What was rather surprising is the discovery that certain sections of this curtain wall were founded on stakes of alder-wood. The survey also showed that the castle never had a fourth corner tower as depicted on some historical maps. The explanation is to be sought in the location of the castle.
