By creating cross-sections of the moat, archaeologists wanted to gain more insight into the nature, dating and size of the moat. The main questions were: was the moat surrounding the castle dug or not? If it involves an artificial moat, when was it dug? Did the original moat have the same shape and size as today? Through the stratigraphic research, the archaeologists also hoped to learn more about the origins of the castle.
