Microscopic analysis of pollen grains collected from the trial trenches enables us to make a fairly accurate reconstruction of the vegetation that occurred in the landscape in the wider area of the castle. Every plant species produces specific pollen that can spread over relatively great distances on the wind. Pollen survive particularly well in low-oxygen environments such as moats. Palynological research of the outflow can provide a great deal of additional information on what people used to eat at the time. The presence of certain herbs and spices can indeed only be detected by pollen analysis.
