During the excavation campaign, the archaeologists worked closely with a metal detection expert. During the investigation of the chutes, the metal detector uncovered quite a number of small metal objects such as pins, aglets, thimbles, coins and insignia. Such finds are barely visible to the naked eye. Coins and insignia are particularly interesting, as these finds can be dated quite accurately and can in that way confirm or refine the dating based on the earthenware. In several cases, metal detection also provided the ultimate proof for a number of hypotheses. Thanks to the discovery of cast-iron cannonballs between the wall sections against the southern tower, this fill of rubble could with certainty be linked to a siege of the castle around 1600.
