Stove tile

A significant amount of earthenware was recovered from the outflow of chute 5. In total, 358 shards were dug up, which can be subdivided into two groups: local/regional earthenware and imported earthenware. Interesting in this context is the presence of fragments of stove tiles and more in particular, fragments of half-round niche tiles with Gothic fronts. Based on the typological and stylistic characteristics, this kind of tiles can be dated back to the 15th to 16th century. Tiled stoves were a common sight in castles, monasteries and abbeys and clearly demonstrate the status of the inhabitants. Stoves consisted of a superstructure that allowed more heat to be radiated into the room. Their backside was placed against a wall and they were fed from an adjacent room through a hole in the wall. The smoke was evacuated through the same opening.
