The archaeological survey was conducted prior to the start of the FIRST RESTORATION CAMPAIGN of the Castle of Beersel. The reason being that the reinforcement of the foundation walls below the waterline would inevitably cause disturbance of the archaeological fills in the moat. The archaeological survey mainly involved excavating four sections of the current moat and performing cone penetration tests near the chutes, the bridge and the southern retaining wall of the castle.
