The Ducal Church of Alsemberg

Tucked away in the rolling landscape of Alsemberg lies a gem of religious heritage: the Ducal Church of Our Lady. This centuries-old pilgrimage church breathes history, mysticism, and architectural splendor.

It all began with a modest chapel in the 12th century, next to a medieval farmhouse. According to legend, it was St. Mary of Hungary who founded a church on this holy spot in 1225, featuring a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary. Due to apparitions at the statue of the Virgin Mary in the church, Alsemberg became a beloved pilgrimage site. Thanks to its special reputation, the church was granted the honorary title of 'Ducal' and, over the centuries, welcomed many noble visitors, such as Philip the Good, Charles V, and Leopold I.

The Ducal church acquired its typical Gothic spire in the mid-19th century. Inside, you can admire impressive Baroque confessionals, an authentic Romanesque baptismal font, and an atmosphere that bears witness to centuries of devotion and craftsmanship.

Today, the Ducal Church still welcomes visitors and culture enthusiasts. Let yourself be moved by the tranquility, the heritage, and the unique history of this special church.
