What is personal data?

Personal data is any data by which the Local Government of Beersel can identify you, directly or indirectly. With your name or national register number, we know immediately (directly) that it is you, but we can also identify you (indirectly) with a combination of your address, age, and gender. Therefore, these are also personal data. Personal data is thus all data that we can link to you in one way or another, such as your email address, your telephone number, or even your IP address (the internet address of your computer).

For definitions of the terms used in this text, such as “Personal Data”, “process”, “controller”, etc., we refer to the GDPR: Table of Contents EU General Data Protection Regulation (EU-GDPR). Privacy/Privacy according to plan. (privacy-regulation.eu) .

What is the General Data Protection Regulation?

The 'GDPR' is the European privacy law.

Previously, the 'Act of 8 December 1992 on the Protection of Privacy with regard to the Processing of Personal Data' – better known as the 'Privacy Act' – protected your personal data. Since 25 May 2018, that old Privacy Act has been replaced by a new European Privacy Act. The media often use the English name: GDPR, or General Data Protection Regulation. In Dutch, this is AVG or Algemene Verordening Gegevensbescherming.

The legislation therefore still deals with the 'processing' of personal data. Incidentally, according to that legislation, the term 'processing' is a very broad concept. Everything we do with your personal data constitutes 'processing': storing, consulting, forwarding, organizing, distributing, and updating it.
